New Copper Biomarker In Dogs

This study evaluated two laboratory methods that could eventually provide noninvasive ways to diagnose copper-associated hepatitis (CAH) in dogs. CAH can be difficult to detect early because serum ALT activity lacks adequate sensitivity, while definitive diagnosis typically requires an invasive liver biopsy. Researchers therefore adapted methods for measuring serum exchangeable copper and a small copper carrier in urine, biomarkers that may reflect abnormal copper metabolism.  

Exchangeable copper represents the more loosely bound, biologically available fraction of circulating copper. Researchers used EDTA to separate this copper from tightly bound copper and determined that an EDTA concentration of 5 g/L provided optimal extraction. A centrifugal force of 5,000 × g was selected for serum testing. For urine, a 3-kDa ultrafiltration membrane was used to measure copper associated with a very small copper-carrying protein thought to participate in removing excess hepatic copper. The optimal centrifugal force for this assay was 4,000 × g. Copper concentrations were measured using inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry.  

Both methods demonstrated generally good analytical performance. Serum exchangeable copper spike recovery ranged from 97.9% to 108.5%. Median within-day and between-day coefficients of variation were 8.5% and 10.8%, respectively, although two serum pools exceeded the predefined 15% variability limit for within-day testing. Urinary copper recovery ranged from 96.7% to 120%. Median within-day variability was only 2.6%, while between-day variability was 5.6%; only one urine pool slightly exceeded the 15% threshold.  

Overall, the investigators successfully adapted both copper assays for dogs with acceptable accuracy and precision. However, this was primarily an analytical validation study rather than a clinical diagnostic trial. The researchers did not determine whether either test can reliably diagnose copper-associated hepatitis or replace liver biopsy. Additional validation studies and clinical trials comparing healthy dogs with dogs affected by copper-associated hepatitis are still needed. If future research confirms their diagnostic value, these assays could provide veterinarians with practical, noninvasive tools for detecting abnormal copper metabolism earlier in the disease process, allowing treatment to begin before irreversible liver damage develops.

New Librela Study

This study examined unusual musculoskeletal abnormalities reported in dogs treated with bedinvetmab (Librela), a monoclonal antibody used to manage pain associated with osteoarthritis. Researchers reviewed adverse event reports submitted to the Zoetis Global Pharmacovigilance database from November 2020 through December 2025. Cases were included only if they contained sufficient medical information and diagnostic imaging to evaluate whether the findings differed from the expected progression of osteoarthritis.  

Among 36,661 reported adverse events, 319 cases met the study criteria for review, and 186 dogs were found to have atypical musculoskeletal changes. The most common abnormality was termed abnormal periarticular bone remodeling (APBR), characterized by excessive irregular new bone formation around joints. Other findings included bone erosion, osteolysis, sclerosis, fractures, joint instability, and luxation. These changes often involved the elbows and tarsi and differed substantially from the radiographic appearance of typical osteoarthritis progression. The abnormalities could occur in one or multiple joints and sometimes progressed over time.  

The affected dogs averaged 8.8 years of age and weighed approximately 28 kg, with Labrador Retrievers representing the largest breed group. Dogs had received bedinvetmab for an average of nearly 18 months before the abnormalities were reported, although the interval ranged from 1 to 64 months. Sixty-three percent of dogs were also receiving nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, and one-quarter had received bedinvetmab in an off-label manner. However, because the study relied on voluntary adverse event reports and lacked information on the total number of treated dogs, it could not determine whether these factors increased the risk of developing APBR.  

The authors concluded that APBR represents a newly recognized pattern of musculoskeletal change associated with some dogs receiving bedinvetmab, although the underlying cause remains unknown. Because this retrospective pharmacovigilance study cannot establish a causal relationship or estimate how frequently these events occur, the findings should be interpreted cautiously. The authors recommend careful monitoring of dogs receiving bedinvetmab and emphasize obtaining baseline diagnostic imaging when osteoarthritis is diagnosed so that unexpected radiographic changes can be recognized if they develop during treatment.

Communication Preferences For Discharges

This study evaluated whether pet owners preferred traditional text-only oncology discharge instructions or instructions enhanced with graphic design elements. Researchers surveyed owners of dogs and cats receiving chemotherapy at a veterinary cancer center between August 2024 and March 2025. Participants reviewed two discharge instruction documents that contained identical medical information but differed in presentation. One version used graphic design principles, including visual cues, white space, illustrations, and improved organization, while the other used a conventional text-based format. The study also examined how owners accessed educational materials and whether demographic factors influenced their preferences.  

Of the 114 eligible pet owners, 78 responses were included in the final analysis. Most participants demonstrated a strong understanding of the discharge instructions, regardless of format, correctly recalling medication information and follow-up recommendations. However, 58% preferred the visually designed document, while only 19% favored the traditional text version, and 23% liked both equally. Participants rated the graphic design version especially highly for its use of visual aids, organization, and formatting that highlighted important information. At the same time, both documents received similar ratings for clarity of purpose, use of everyday language, sentence structure, and readability. Nearly all respondents (96%) completed the survey on a smartphone, indicating that mobile devices are the primary method for accessing veterinary educational materials.  

The findings suggest that effective client education depends not only on readable language but also on thoughtful visual design. Although both documents met recommended reading levels, the addition of graphic design features significantly improved owner preference and may enhance comprehension and engagement. Older participants, particularly those over 60 years of age, were somewhat more likely to prefer the traditional text format, likely because of its larger font and familiar layout. Overall, the authors conclude that veterinary discharge instructions should combine plain language with effective typography, visual organization, and smartphone-friendly formatting to improve health literacy and support better patient care.
